AS part of its efforts to encourage indigenous language, a United States of America based organization, the Edo Leadership Assembly in collaboration with the Benin Cultural Heritage Center have provided scholarships to students studying Edo language at various higher institutions across the country.

The project is aimed at increasing the number of qualified teachers that could teach Edo language- in a bid to reignite interest in speaking and writing Edo amongst the younger generation.

President of ELA, Oboma Asemota at the recently concluded 2009 Leadership Summit said the association was entrusted with a substantial donation by supporters and donors and pledged the association's judicious use of the fund among other projects being planned by the group.

In an email message to The Guardian yesterday, Vice President, Publicity of ELA, Joan Oviawe said the partnership with the Benin Cultural Heritage Centre could revive the waning interest in Edo language.

The organisation, she said was planning a pre-mission visit to rural communities in Edo State in preparation for a substantial medical mission.

"Many of the projects in our pipeline will be crystallised at the 2010 summit. The goal is to expand the reach of ELA in terms of collaborating with other credible organisations and reaching out to various communities in Edo State interested in self help projects"
